“Saturday Night Live” is supposed to be very scary.
Spirit Halloween follows the NBC sketch comedy series as it unearths its season 50 premiere skit at a pop-up costume store.
“We’re great at bringing people back from the dead,” the store wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, along with a photo of a fake SNL costume.
The costume had the words “unrelated 50 year old TV show” written on it. The package stated that it contained “dated references, unknown cast members, and diminished ratings.”
“SNL” has yet to respond to Spirit Halloween’s applause.
During the season 50 premiere, which aired on Saturday (September 28), the show aired a commercial parody of Spirit Halloween, which parodied the seasonal retailer.
“Things may be booming on Wall Street, but communities are struggling on Main Street,” Heidi Garner says in voiceover at the beginning of the sketch. “Closed stores, closed stores, empty parking lots. When you’re going through tough times, it’s easy to feel like no one cares.”
“But help is on the way,” Garner, 41, added as Spirit Halloween’s fake employees (played by Garner, Feynman, and Michael Longfellow) tout their business accomplishments.
“Here we are providing vulnerable communities with what they need most: wigs that give them rashes, disposable fog machines, and just enough trimming to avoid lawsuits,” said Feynman, 36. It’s a costume of a famous character.”
Garner joked that the store “creates six weeks of work for America’s most victimized perverts.”
After Feynman declared that Spirit Halloween “helps you make dreams come true,” she was approached by a little girl requesting a Taylor Swift costume.
Feynman gives the girl a “Blonde Singing Woman” costume. When the girl points out that the outfit isn’t Swift’s, Feynman replies, “Neither do you.”
At the end of the fake commercial, Feynman, Garner and Longfellow, 30, say: 6 weeks. Because on November 1st we will be gone. And all this junk gets thrown in the trash. ”
The season 50 premiere was hosted by Jean Smart and musical guest Jelly Roll.
This episode featured skits digging into House of the Dragon, The Real Housewives, Chapel Lawn, Charli XCX, and more.
Cast member Bowen Yang also spoke out after the show received backlash for a joke he made about Roan during a segment on “Weekend Update.” He appeared in the role of Moo Deng, the baby hippo that became a hot topic this month, and addressed Roan’s appeal to set boundaries with fans at the time.
“I’ve been working non-stop for the past 10 weeks,” said Yang, wearing a hippo costume. “The response has been overwhelming, but we’ve reached a point where we need to set limits.”
“Remember, women don’t owe you anything. When I’m in the corral, tripping over things, biting my trainer’s knees, I’m working, that’s the project. ” he continued, referring to Roan’s eerily similar Instagram post in August. “Don’t scream my name or expect a picture just because I’m your parasocial best friend or because you appreciate my talent.”
Viewers felt SNL focused on Roan’s mental health issues. Mr. Yang later denied mocking the artist. “Everything she’s ever asked is reasonable and yet we can tie it into another story about boundaries etc. I need a hose…” he wrote on his Instagram Story on Sunday. I wrote it.
Roan is scheduled to appear as a musical guest on a variety show on November 2nd.
The show also teased the upcoming presidential election, with Maya Rudolph returning as Vice President Kamala Harris. James Austin Johnson played Donald Trump, Bowen Yang played J.D. Vance, Dana Carvey played Joe Biden, and Jim Gaffigan played Governor Tim Walz.
