Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said a bit of career advice and a five-word phrase convinced recruiters he was the right person for the job.
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, who makes $1.6 million a year in base salary, attributes his success to a piece of “cliché” career advice he started following in his 20s: Believe in yourself.
“I know it’s a cliché, but you have to have the guts to believe in yourself and not give up, even if it doesn’t work out at first,” he said during a May 2024 commencement speech at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

The 50-year-old CEO, who was called a “dream hire” and a “hall of fame restaurant CEO” after being selected by Starbucks, said he carries a “worn out notebook” to record his progress toward his career goals.
“Whatever it takes to stay focused on your goal, do it and believe you can do it,” Nicole said, adding that trusting her intuition and instincts has played a big role in her success.

“There will be times in your career when your gut will kick in,” he was quoted as saying in a CNBC report on “Make It.” “Embrace your instinctual intelligence and take action. Trust your gut.”
Nicol also said his confidence and five-word phrase set him apart from other candidates in line for Starbucks’ CEO job.
