Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has formally endorsed Kamala Harris for president of the United States, a move he made during his mic-drop moment, quoting Warriors superstar Stephen Curry.
“When the votes are counted (on November 5), in the words of the great Stephen Curry, we can say to Donald Trump … well done!” Kerr said at the Democratic National Convention on Monday, recreating Curry’s iconic 3-point celebration.
Kerr, fresh from leading the U.S. men’s basketball team to a fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics earlier this month, appeared on the first day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, where he won five NBA championships (1996-1999, 2003).
“As you all know, a lot of great things happened at the United Center, especially in the ’90s, and all you young people can do is Google ‘Michael Jordan’ and find out all about it,” Kerr joked. “There was a great atmosphere in this building back then, and I feel that same winning spirit here tonight.”
Carr said he would be criticized for speaking at a political event — “I can see all the ‘shut up and whistle’ tweets flying around right now” — but said the election was “too important for us as Americans not to speak out.”

“As a coach and former player, I believe in certain types of leadership,” Carr said. “I believe that leaders must exhibit dignity. I believe that leaders must tell the truth. I believe that leaders should be able to laugh at themselves. I believe that leaders must care about and love the people they lead. I believe that leaders should have logic and expertise, but be fully aware that no one has all the answers. In fact, some of the best answers come from members of the team.”
“I see all of those qualities” in Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Carr said.
“I can think of no better metaphor for the essence of our nation than Team USA coming together at the Olympic Games, with athletes from all over this great country coming together to don the red, white and blue,” Kerr said. “The joy, compassion and dedication to country we saw at the Olympics is what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz have, and it’s what our country needs: leadership. Real leadership. Leadership that doesn’t seek to divide us, but that recognizes and celebrates our common purpose.”
Last month, Ms. Harris visited with Kerr and the U.S. men’s basketball team in Las Vegas before the team departed for the Paris Olympics. Mr. Kerr said Ms. Harris’ visit was “a great reminder of the fact that we’re all playing for our country, and Vice President Harris has been amazing.”
