Stevie Nicks has released a candid new single, “The Lighthouse,” inspired by the fight to restore abortion rights in the United States.
Nicks released this powerful, brazen rock song in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2022 ruling overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that held Americans had a constitutional right to abortion. I wrote it.
“It seemed like overnight people started saying, ‘What can we do as a collective force about this?'” Nix said. “For me, it was about writing songs. It took me a while because I was on the go. And early one morning, I was watching the news on TV and some newscaster was like talking to me. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night.
“That was September 6, 2022. I’ve been working on it ever since. I often said to myself, ‘This may be the most important thing I’ve ever done. do not have”. Standing up for American women, their daughters and granddaughters, and the men who love them. ”This is a hymn. ”
In the song, Nicks is the titular lighthouse guiding women in the movement for their rights. “I want to teach them to fight/I want to tell them this has happened before, don’t let it happen again,” she sings.
The chorus is likewise a call to action. “They take your soul, take your power, unless you stand up and take it back/Look into the future and be angry/It’s slipping through your fingers, you don’t have it What I had / And I don’t have much time to get it back.”
Nicks is backed by Sheryl Crow, who plays guitar and bass and also provides backing vocals. Crowe also co-produced the song with 13-time Grammy Award winner Dave Cobb.
The Lighthouse was released in the midst of a U.S. election campaign where abortion access is at the forefront of campaigning.
President Trump has bragged about appointing Supreme Court justices who overturned decisions made under President Joe Biden. “After 50 years of failure and no one has come close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade,” he said in May. In August, he said he had “no regrets” about the court’s decision, saying, “The federal government should have nothing to do with this issue. This issue is being resolved at the state level, and people are very concerned about this. I am satisfied.”
Kamala Harris has repeatedly criticized Trump on the issue, characterizing him earlier this week as someone who said “women should be punished for making decisions that they are entitled to make about their bodies and their futures.” I attached it.
Currently, abortion laws are determined at the state level, with 14 states banning abortion, and 11 more states listed as “hostile” to abortion by the Center for Reproductive Rights. A study published this month by Advancing New Standards in Reproduction Health found that doctors are forcing women to carry non-viable pregnancies to term, forcing them into substandard care.
Nicks, 76, has used his music in recent years to focus on the civil rights struggle. Her 2020 one-off track “Show Them the Way” was inspired by watching documentaries about the civil rights movement, with Nicks singing songs such as Martin Luther King Jr., John Lennon, and John Lennon. I imagine performing at a political charity event attended by F. Kennedy and others. She then performed a cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.” The song was originally inspired by clashes between police and young people over curfews in Los Angeles, and became synonymous with the anti-Vietnam War movement.
“The Lighthouse” is a rare all-new song for Nicks, whose last album was 2011’s “In Your Dreams.” She later released a new recording of her previous demos in 2014, 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault.
She has continued touring in recent years, including co-headlining tours with Billy Joel in 2023 and 2024. She will appear as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live on October 12th, where she may perform “The Lighthouse.”
Although her new song does condemn Trumpism, Nicks has not explicitly endorsed Harris. Instead, she urged people to register to vote and hinted at Swift’s support for Harris in a recent Instagram post, writing: you and your beliefs. ” She agreed with Swift’s own description of herself as a “childless cat lady” and J.D. Vance’s derisive description of the American Democrat, agreeing with “a childless dog lady.” did.
