Either way, there’s no point in sugar-coating it: the PC numbers are horrifying. It’s unclear what the platform holder could do to turn things around at this point, but they’d need to conduct a major internal investigation, since Helldivers 2, which was supposed to be one of the company’s biggest hits ever, has turned into one of its biggest flops ever.
Original article: There’s so much to unravel about Firewalk Studios’ debut shooter Concord that we may eventually need to write a full post-mortem. However, now’s not the time, as the title only officially launched on PS5 and PC yesterday. As expected, performance was particularly poor on Steam, with concurrent players peaking at just 697.
That’s significantly less than other high-profile flops like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (peaked at 13,459 players) and Redfall (peaked at 6,124 players). Another big release this week, Black Myth: Wukong, had a peak of 2.4 million players. It’s not a fair comparison, as they’re very different types of games, but it puts things in perspective.
It’s worth noting that these numbers are for Steam only, and judging from our empirical observations, there are far more people playing on PS5. Crossplay can be disabled, but we left it on and could see that nearly every player had a PlayStation logo next to their username on the score screen. Of course, this is entirely circumstantial, and we don’t yet know the exact number of people playing on Sony’s system.
But as expected, word spread about the poor numbers, and once a title starts to smell like failure, it’s unfortunately hard to shake off. Unfortunately, Concord seems to be at the center of several storms: some don’t like the character designs, others are tired of hero shooters, and many feel that Concord needs to fail to get a message across to Sony about its live service strategy.
I’ll post a review soon, but all in all, it’s pretty disappointing. This is a very high budget release that’s free of all the sleazy business practices that so many have been so vocal about. I fully understand that the gameplay style and character design won’t be to everyone’s taste, but the level of animosity directed towards this title is just bizarre to see.
