Living in New York City, it’s hard to get excited about summer shoes. The idea of wearing dainty flip-flops in the filth of the city just doesn’t feel right. Fall shoes, on the other hand, are to my taste. But after spending the last three months obsessed with chunky wedges and slides, I’m at a loss as to what shoes to buy for the coming season. So I turned to a fashion expert. Thankfully, pro stylist Marina Ingvarsson has the answer, sharing the five shoe trends you’ll see everywhere this fall.
From ruffled flats to structured boots, Ingvarsson’s trend forecast has all the footwear you’ll need to walk in style this fall. After the fashion-forward designer shared her style predictions, I scoured Amazon, my go-to source for refreshing your closet on a budget, for corresponding styles.
Stylist-approved fall shoe trends
Ballet Core
“Balletcore has taken to pirouettes in the fall,” says Ingvarsson. This summer’s biggest “it” shoe, worn by the likes of Katie Holmes and Jennifer Lopez, is stepping into next season. To try out the trend for yourself (that is, if you haven’t already), try on this pair on sale featuring cap-toe detailing worn by Meghan Markle. Or, if you’re more into risqué shoes, pick up this mesh pair to match Jennifer Lawrence.
Square toe
Square-toed shoes are “back in the spotlight this season,” according to Ingvarsson. According to the expert, this structured silhouette “offers a stylish twist on the classic shape we know and love.” She recommends trying the style with “chic flats,” like these strappy Mary Janes. Or, if you’re looking for a “bold boot,” opt for a chunky, block-heeled bootie. Whatever style you prefer, Ingvarsson says this silhouette is “all about balancing form and function.”
Knee-high boots
A style beloved by Taylor Swift, over-the-knee boots are “this season’s ultimate versatile staple,” says Ingvarsson. The leg-lengthening style is the perfect day-to-night shoe, “seamlessly elevating any look.” These light beige boots are perfect for daytime errands, while these sleek black boots are better for a night on the town. Ingvarsson recommends pairing over-the-knee boots with everything from flowy dresses to blazers and capris, as they “add a chic, longer silhouette to both formal and easy-going looks.”
Furry texture
With cooler weather, it’s time to slip into comfy shoes, making it the perfect time to try out the “furry” trend. According to Ingvarsson, shoes with a bit of softness add “a playful, cozy touch to any outfit” and offer a way to “elevate your style without sacrificing comfort.” Whether you’re heading out or staying at home, there are endless ways to get in on this trend. If you’re looking for a luxe pair of mules, try these leather slides for just $57. Or, to complete your work-from-home loungewear look, why not slip into these $36 clogs?
Smart slingbacks
Summer’s most practical shoe is making a comeback this fall, with Ingvarsson declaring slingbacks “a must-have this season.” Worn by everyone from Kate Middleton to Queen Letizia, slingbacks are a genius way to look lavish without straining your feet. As Ingvarsson says, the style is all about “combining elegance with practicality.” Peeking under baggy jeans or wide-leg trousers, the $60 slingback is a timeless style that will instantly elevate your look.
