This summer, DCCC students completed internships in digital marketing, IT and biomedical research, earning college credits while beefing up their resumes.

Internships help college students gain experience in a particular career field, boost their confidence, and give them an edge over other candidates in the job search.
Vanguard Group, Delaware County, Wistar Institute and Rosati Water Ice are just a few of the places Delaware County Community College students will be interning this summer.
They spearheaded digital marketing campaigns, worked in information technology and network engineering fields, conducted advanced biomedical research, and added value to their host organizations while polishing their resumes.
The internship was facilitated by DCCC’s Student Employment and Co-op Center, which offers co-op education and internship programs, where students can earn college credit and also receive compensation.
Ella Ferris, a business studies major from Devon, spent the summer as an editorial and writing intern at Vanguard Group in Malvern, working for Vanguard’s in-house marketing agency.
“I had the privilege of working with incredibly talented people who share my passion for creativity and innovation,” she said. The experience helped her land another job as a lead generation intern with Wayne-based insurance company USLI. “I’m deeply grateful to Delaware County Community College for their unwavering support and for providing me with this amazing opportunity.”
Alexandra Showers, a network engineering major from Brookhaven, worked as an IT intern with Delaware County in Media. “DCCC guided me to apply for internships that were a perfect fit for what I was looking for,” she said. “I learned valuable information and gained new skills.” After completing her internship, the county offered her a full-time position.
Mohamed Diakite, a business administration major from Drexel Hill, and Ayoola Shomotun, a computer science major from Upper Darby, were also summer IT interns at Delaware County.
Shane Justice, a business administration major from West Chester, interned at Rosati Water Ice in Clifton Heights in digital marketing and merchandising. That experience helped him land a fall internship at SAP America in Newtown Square as a personalization and dynamic digital marketing intern. After graduating from DCCC, he plans to earn a bachelor’s degree from Drexel University and pursue a career in data marketing.
“DCCC gave me real-world experience and the opportunity to combine classroom curriculum with hands-on job skills, which has made me a better candidate in the job market and an overall more well-rounded person,” he said.
Sarah Alkurdi of Bryn Mawr, Marie Aude Bray of Upper Darby, Tatiana Bowman Viles of Collingdale, Kenechukwu Ilodigwe of Aldan, Karina Juarez of Collingdale, Adrienne Michnik of West Chester and Jay Rose of Ridley Park have been selected for the competitive biotechnology engineer training program at the Wistar Institute, a Philadelphia-based global leader in biomedical research with expertise in cancer, immunology, infectious diseases and vaccine development.
For computer science major Bowman-Bales, the internship solidified her interest in bioinformatics, which is the use of computational tools to analyze biological data from laboratories studying different pathogens and diseases. She hopes to complete her master’s degree and pursue a job as a bioinformatician/lab technician.
Ilodigwe, a natural sciences major, welcomed the opportunity to fulfill her dream of improving the lives of people battling serious illnesses and contributing to disease prevention. “The internship broadened my perspective on research and taught me how to think like a scientist. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.”
