Taylor Swift appeared to distance herself from her pro-Trump friend Brittany Mahomes at Thursday night’s Kansas City Chiefs game.
For much of last season, Swift, the superstar girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, typically accompanied Mahomes to games. But TMZ reported that Swift watched the Chiefs’ season opener in a separate suite. The move came after Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife appeared to support Donald Trump’s campaign.
In August, Brittany became a hot topic after liking a message posted on Instagram by former President Donald Trump. After facing a flurry of criticism, Brittany slammed the “haters” for having “deep-rooted (childhood) issues.”
Swift and Kelsey have been the subject of numerous right-wing conspiracy theories that they are operatives to support Democratic politics, but they have remained quiet on politics in recent months.
“Miss Americana” singer Swift endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris ahead of the 2020 election, but has faced questions and attacks over her relative silence ahead of the 2024 election. When Trump posted an AI-generated image that falsely portrayed Swift as endorsing him, she did not take legal action despite public backlash.
Swift also came under fire for failing to condemn Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker for his misogynistic and anti-LGBTQ+ comments made at the College of Saint Benedict’s graduation ceremony, especially after Kelce defended Butker’s comments and character.
Still, Swift’s fans raised thousands of dollars through a “Swifties for Kamala” Zoom meeting, which featured speeches from singer Carole King and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Trump, meanwhile, seemed shocked by the pop star’s support for the Democratic Party: During a November 2023 interview, the former president seemed taken aback by the idea that Swift might not be acting out her liberal beliefs in front of the cameras.
“Is she really a liberal? Is she just acting?” he said. “I’m amazed that a country star can be successful and be a liberal.”
