Tesla China recorded 14,400 new vehicle registrations for the week of Aug. 26 to Sept. 1, 2024. The figure marks a 1.41% increase from the 14,200 registrations recorded by the electric car maker in the previous week.
While Tesla China doesn’t release weekly sales figures, we can get a rough idea of the company’s overall performance in the country from new car registrations, which fortunately are closely tracked and reported by industry watchers and automakers like Li Auto.
Additionally, according to data from Li Auto, Tesla China saw 14,400 new vehicle registrations in the week ending September 1. For reference, Tesla China saw 14,200 registrations in the week ending August 25, 14,300 insurance registrations in the week ending August 18, 15,500 registrations in the week ending August 11, and 12,500 new vehicle registrations in the week ending August 4, 2024.

Tesla China’s third-quarter new vehicle registration trends show the electric car maker working hard to produce and sell as many cars as possible before the end of the year. Tesla’s efforts appear to be paying off, with industry observers estimating that Tesla’s 2024 numbers are about 5,000 units away from matching its 2023 numbers.
Despite Tesla China’s impressive performance in 2023, the company took a hit to vehicle production in the second half of the year as it temporarily halted production at Giga Shanghai for retooling work to prepare and ramp up production of the redesigned Model 3 sedan. Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, the Model Y crossover, is also produced at Giga Shanghai.

Elon Musk said he thinks Tesla can surpass its 2023 record in 2024. However, considering that Tesla delivered a total of 1,808,581 vehicles in all of 2023, and the company only delivered 830,776 vehicles between Q1 and Q2 2024, Tesla China and Giga Shanghai will likely be very busy in Q3 and Q4 2024.
