Vice President Ligaty Gachagua has warned some Mount Kenya leaders who act against the region’s interests that they risk being ousted from power in the 2027 elections.
The Democrat, who spoke at a wedding gathering on Saturday, said Mt Kenya residents have given a warning to the above leaders, adding that if they do not change their attitude, their fate will soon be sealed.
Gachagua said his assessment of the situation on the ground made it clear that these leaders were at risk of losing the 2027 elections if they did not change.
“As we prepare for the 2027 elections, please keep in mind that the upcoming elections will be very competitive. You all know that I am a person who listens to the voices on the ground. Some big decisions have already been made,” Gachagua said.
He was speaking at the wedding of Paul Wetosi and Juja MP George Koimbuli’s daughter Jacinta Wanjiru which took place at the Juja Preparatory School grounds in Kiambu County.
The DPJ’s remarks come amid a fierce battle in the Mt Kenya region in which some lawmakers are opposed to the party.
These differences have been exposed in the open, leading some lawmakers to harshly criticize the Democrats.
Those who have publicly attacked the DP include close aides to President William Ruto, sparking speculation that this could have a negative impact on Kenya’s Kwanzaa government.
Some of the leaders who have clashed with the Democratic Party were recently allegedly involved in plotting to impeach the president, but the president is said to have met with his team and thwarted the plan.
But on Saturday, Gachagaua warned “rebel” leaders that they needed to “change their attitude” by December.
“By December this year, a decision will be made as to who will return and who will not,” he said.
“Once we get past December, nothing can change. Anyone who has lost their way needs to get back on track by December.”
The DP warned the nation that the silence of Mt Kenya residents should not be misconstrued as they are not closely following political happenings in the county.
He said there are smart people in the region who are capable of deciding the right path for the region, and he said he couldn’t lie to them.
“I listen to people all the time and what I know is that the people of Mount Kenya are very intelligent,” he said.
“You know how they’re quiet and think they don’t know anything. If you lie to them, they’ll just look at you and say nothing.”
