Fifth wheels have become increasingly popular in recent years, but buying a fifth wheel can often feel like giving your life’s savings to a dealer. Introducing Keystone RV and their Cougar Sport lineup of lightweight, extremely affordable fifth wheels to change that.
When it comes to fifth wheels, what do we mean by “lightweight and super affordable”? Well, let’s take the unit featured in the video below as a perfect example. For example, the 2700BH Layout featured in Matt’s RV Review has a shipping weight of 7,580 pounds (3,438 kg) and can carry up to 1,920 pounds of cargo. Speaking of “super affordable,” the starting price for the 2700BH is just under $47,355. Not a bad deal considering it can accommodate a large family of at least eight people.
How is this possible? It all starts with a dual axle chassis, to which Keystone adds a shell made of laminated sidewalls, which they call a “5-sided aluminum superstructure.” It also has a heated, enclosed underbelly for colder weather. This is also a Lippert frame or chassis, so you can expect bells and whistles like a step ladder at the entrance.

Now, what I really like about this Fifth Wheel is the way it looks. Not only does it have a shade system so future owners can enjoy the outdoors, but it also has countless storage spaces and cabinets all around to store all your camping gear. You’ll want to bring along an outdoor dining set, fishing poles, outdoor cooking equipment, and my favorite, a tent annex. If you want to create a campsite that will also accommodate family and friends, the tent annex is a must. Did we mention it has a hitch for a small cargo trailer?
Once you’ve set up the campsite of your dreams, it’s time to let the kids run around and for you and the adults to sit back and drink some cold beer. Maybe even do some grilling. You might also want to prepare the inside for the nights ahead at this stage, which includes activating the slide-outs to extend the inside. Chances are, you’ve already done that.
Once inside, you’re given the choice to head toward the front or tip of the trailer, or toward the rear. Forward or to the right of the doorway, you’ll see roughly half of the unit. First, you’ll pass the bathroom on the left, which has separate amenities and leads to a walk-around queen-size bed, nightstands, and overhead storage.

To the left of the entryway and directly ahead, the Cougar sports a large tri-fold sofa, a U-shaped dinette and, my favorite, an L-shaped galley, freeing up the center of the living space for all manner of activity.
Finally, at the very back of the Cougar, there is a bunk area suitable for four or more children. However, there is also the option to add a third bunk, so the sleeping capacity in this area can be expanded to six or more people, depending on the size of the occupants, of course. Just be sure to adhere to the weight ratings set by the manufacturer.
Just imagine yourself in the living area of this unit, preparing something for the kids to eat when they come home from playing outside. The high-rise faucet, stove, and countertops are stocked with all the basics you need to prepare a three-course meal. Also note the enormous refrigerator next to the dining room. While you do so, you might want to listen to your favorite tunes. There’s an entertainment center for that.

As for the more important off-grid features, we should point out that this layout has 54 gallons (204 liters) of fresh water available. If you want to harness the power of the sun, it will cost you a little more. But if you do, you and your crew will be ready to discover the wildest places. Not all travel trailers are suitable for off-road use, so be sure to follow the usage declared by the manufacturer.
Now all you have to do is find one of these babies at your local dealer, grab your friends and go take a look. And if the 2700BH doesn’t fit your lifestyle, be sure to check out the countless other layouts this lineup has to offer. Some are cheaper, some are more expensive, but no matter which one you choose, and wherever you park your truck, you’re sure to find a home away from home.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone of some good habits to maximize the lifespan of your unit. First, load your unit correctly and according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Second, I will say it again: follow the path the RV Gods intended. Finally, be sure to do routine inspections before and after you leave. Enjoy your trip!
