Leave it to Nintendo to excite fans who are already excited about the impending Switch 2 announcement by announcing a gorgeous alarm clock instead. Alalmo will wake you up with Mario coins and Pikmin chirps. It costs $100, works best when sleeping alone, and is disrupting the collective intelligence of the internet.
Quirky, quirky, unnecessarily expensive, and oddly timed, it ticks all the boxes. For weeks, ever since Nintendo forgoed its traditional September showcase, rumors have been circulating behind the scenes that official news about the Switch 2 could finally be announced any time soon. Instead, the company rolled out Alarmo without looking. Pre-orders are now open and already sold out. Naturally, some people are trying to sell Alarmo, which won’t ship until 2025. It sells for nearly twice the standard price on eBay..
But the funniest thing about Alarmo is that it doesn’t work well for couples. The sensor that stops the clock when you get out of bed is difficult to tell when two people are sleeping together. “The alarm cannot detect a specific person, so if multiple people are sleeping in the same bed within range of the sensor, the alarm may stop when one person gets out of bed, but there is still someone in the bed. When this is detected, the alarm will resume. Read FAQ. “Once everyone gets out of bed, the alarm will stop completely.”
Looks like fun. The internet agrees, reacting to the couple’s watch troubles, their names, the timing of their announcements, and more.
There’s also an official Q&A with designers Yosuke Tamori and Tetsuya Akama about how this device came to be. There teeth 4 another parts! Essentially, the experiment began with the goal of finding new uses for the company’s motion sensor technology. And while you might expect a Nintendo watch to include a gaming element, we ultimately decided against it because we didn’t want to interfere with the normal sleep incentives by gamifying it.
However, during testing, there was one prototype of Alarmo that had people making smack gestures that were clearly timed to the sound of a clock. It beeped every time Sounds like rhythm heaven. RIP.
