Sales fell from 83,000 to 29,000, with the V8 receiving the most orders at 27,900. The convertible also became rarer, with only 2,100 sold and the R/T only 4,630 sold.
One Challenger, born in 1971, only recently appeared on eBay, hoping to find refuge in another garage after spending more than 30 years locked away in a barn.
This car is in surprisingly good condition for a classic car that’s just been pulled from long-term storage. Despite some obvious rust on the body (it’s not too bad), the interior is clean and the engine still works. The Challenger’s condition is good news for anyone looking to restore their car to factory specification, although it’s unclear how much of it is original.
According to eBay seller yagster1000, there’s some typical rust on the floor and trunk, but the damage is minor and shouldn’t be a problem. There is some rust on the body as well, but a full restoration project would include a repaint, and they should be able to repair the damage before spraying on the new coat of paint.
This car has a complete instrument panel with rally cluster, a complete dash in excellent condition, air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes.
The engine under the hood is a 318ci unit in good condition, but the owner says that buyers looking to upgrade were also offered a 340ci block with additional parts included in the sale. The 318 was rated at 230 horsepower and was the base V8 engine in the 1971 Challenger, while the most popular was the 425 horsepower Hemi.
But the 426 four-barrel was also the most expensive, adding $790 to the 318-equipped Challenger’s base price of $2,853.
Everything about this Challenger suggests it won’t be on the market for long, which means it’s all about price: The owner believes $9,500 is a fair price for this car, but he’s also enabled the “Make an Offer” button so buyers interested in the Challenger can submit an offer.
According to the auction site, interest in this Challenger has been overwhelming, with nearly 150 people already adding the car to their watch list. It’s unclear if anyone is in negotiations to purchase it, but if you want this Challenger you’d better hurry, as it could find a new home at any time. The car is parked in Troy, Michigan, but it’s unclear if it’s ready to be driven to its new garage.
