I shared the image above with a few of my Kotaku colleagues and asked them what they thought the game was about. The most popular answer was “Call of Duty.” That’s totally fair. Looks like new call of duty A port of the game, probably its mobile version. But no. The screenshot above is from fortnite.
The screenshot above is not the result of a fan-made mod or some weird hack involving camera tricks and exploits. Instead, this is from a new post from Epic, introducing an experimental FPS module that creators can use in UEFN to create new maps and games from a first-person perspective. Look out for Call of Duty. Next up is Fortnite!
As stated in the October 1st blog postEpic Games is getting closer to adding a proper first-person perspective option to Fortnite. We’ve known about it for a while now, thanks to dataminers and rumors. Epic is working on a first-person mode for the popular battle royale game. But this is the first official look at what the studio has been developing. Previously, the only way to get FPS options on fan-created Fortnite maps was to: Crude workarounds or camera hacks It wasn’t great and was prone to bugs and glitches. Epic also acknowledges these workarounds in a blog post, starting the article with the phrase “No workarounds please.”
While an official FPS-like mode isn’t included in the game yet, Epic’s new experimentation tools allow you to see what’s possible in the future. This module is now part of the Unreal Engine editor powered by Fortnite known as UEFN. The results seem pretty good. I think most people will be fooled into thinking this is something other than Fortnite.
Currently, this new module is still being built and tested, so Epic has not yet released any maps with the FPS module to the public. Also, not all weapons work perfectly and there are some graphical issues. But it looks solid even in this rough condition.
I don’t think it will be long before Epic offers an FPS battle royale mode in Fortnite. And I’m excited to see what the UEFN developers can create with this module once Epic improves it and allows players to publish FPS games and maps. Fortnite already has 200 games. Now it could be even bigger. It’s wild to think.
