KOLKATA: Three days after Rahul Gandhi made the “Kolkata to Kathua” remark over the rape and murder of a PGT doctor at RG Kall Medical College and Hospital, the Trinamool Party on Sunday attacked the Congress on the Karnataka Chief Minister issue.
Most of India’s Union partners have called for justice and supported the steps taken by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government in the case. But Rahul said there had been “an attempt to save the accused instead of giving justice to the victim”. The Bengal Congress party has also taken to the streets in protest.
Former Indian Senator Kunal Ghosh, posting an image of a news article about Karnataka Governor Tawar Chand Gehlot approving the prosecution of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the land distribution scam, wrote on X, “So Rahul Gandhi, would you ask the Prime Minister to resign? This is a flagrant corruption charge. You have made your comments on social media without having the correct information about the WB case and without knowing the steps taken by Mamata Banerjee. So can you kindly take action regarding the Prime Minister?”
Speaking on X on Thursday, Rahul said: “My thoughts are with the victim’s family who are suffering this excruciating pain. They should get justice at any cost and the culprits should be punished in a way that will set an example for the society. The attempt to spare the accused instead of giving justice to the victim raises serious questions about the hospital and the local administration.”
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Sunday termed the Kolkata incident as extremely heartbreaking, distressing and unimaginable and urged the CBI to expedite the case. “The Bengal government has launched a new safety programme and proposed a committee for women’s safety. But combating sexual violence requires a thorough effort at a broader level, including raising awareness within the home. While incidents are happening in public places like medical colleges and hotels, it is also important to address domestic sexual violence perpetrated by relatives. Mamata Banerjee’s questioning and the central minister’s accusations against the district highlight the responsibility involved. The issue should not be politicised and should be handled with care by all involved,” Singh told media.
Defending the chief minister, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said, “Mamata Banerjee understands the pain of women. She has taken action as per demand. The government has also decided to get the CBI or any other agency to investigate the matter. The BJP should not play politics in this matter.” Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi also highlighted the steps taken by Banerjee in the issue.
