The NYT Mini is a simplified version of the paper’s larger, long-running crossword puzzle. On most days, the puzzle contains three to five clues in each direction in a 5 x 5 grid, but on weekends the puzzles often get larger.
Unlike the larger edition, the NYT Mini Crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or the NYT Games app, though you’ll need a NYT Games subscription to access past puzzles in the archives.
The NYT Mini is a fun daily distraction that usually doesn’t take up much time at all — I try to complete the standard grid every weekday in under a minute — but sometimes I miss a clue or two and have to uncover the answer.

It took me 0:12 to complete today’s NYT Mini.
Wow, I got through today’s mini in a flash – I got all of the Across hints right away, which is definitely a good thing since I had no idea about RXS, but I would have gotten all of the other hints for Down right away.
