HARRINGEN — Brenda Valdez Prosis wanted a career change and found it at Texas State Technical University.
“I previously worked in the accounting field and have held several jobs for over 20 years including clerk, data entry, bookkeeping, accounting staff, and escrow officer,” Valdez-Prosise said. . “I wanted a different career path that would allow me to work with my hands.”
The Brownsville resident is currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in precision machining technology at TSTC.
“My instructor (Francisco Garcia) is very patient with me,” she said. “He gives me step-by-step instructions to help me understand the assignments. Our goal with each assignment is to make sure it’s as accurate as possible.”
Garcia said Valdez-Prosise was resourceful.
“Brenda is fearless when it comes to getting the job done,” he said. “Recently, she created a CNC (computer numerical control) program by hand. She did a great job and was able to operate it without much instruction.”
Valdez Prosise credits her grandmother and husband with getting her interested in precision machining.
“When I was little, I wanted a teacup table set to play with,” she said. “My grandmother taught me how to make it. She took scrap wood and a handsaw and showed me how to measure it.”
As an adult, Valdez Prosise became interested in manufacturing metalwork as she worked on projects with her husband.
“My husband bought me some equipment to use in the backyard, including a CNC plasma cutter,” she said. “I watched some YouTube videos to learn more, but I couldn’t understand it. I searched online and saw an advertisement for TSTC’s precision machining technology, so I signed up.”
