After much anticipation, Tyra Banks returned to the Angels runway for the first time in nearly 20 years at the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The moment was a huge one for the former supermodel, who retired in 2005 to focus on other careers. Modeling culture has changed a lot since then and now you can do it all even at 50 years old.
At the Oct. 15 event, Banks emerged from the floor wearing a black catsuit, silver crystal corset, and a dramatic black and silver cape that swayed behind her in an iconic and timeless strut. appeared on the catwalk. Banks posted a video of the momentous performance on Instagram, simply captioning it, “In case you forgot.”
She announced her return in September, telling Harper’s Bazaar that she “never thought in a million years” that she would return to her roots in this way. She called it “a bit of an out-of-body experience.”
When Ms. Banks decided to retire, her goal was to host a talk show. At the time, the two career paths of modeling and more “serious” entertainment were mutually exclusive, she said. Now, she’s happy to see the modeling world embracing diversity in all its forms.
“The world knows that I became a businessman, ran an ice cream company, spoke at business institutions, earned a certificate in a course at Harvard, taught at Stanford University, and, yes, modeled for Victoria’s Secret. “I think I’ve evolved to be able to do that,” she said. “I think the world has changed in a way that people realize that as women, we don’t have to have stereotypes or fit into one mold.”
When she teased fans about her return to modeling, the response was predictably astronomical, causing Banks to reconsider her permanent retirement. But she vowed to take it one step at a time, starting with the Victoria’s Secret runway. “That’s where I want to come out of retirement, so I can evaluate everything else and figure out what I want to do and what I don’t want to do,” she said. Time to wait to see what she does next.
