After “The Simpsons” accurately predicted Donald Trump’s presidency, Armando Iannucci doesn’t want that to happen.
The creators of “Veep” reminded fans with an X that the Emmy Award-winning HBO series (2012-2019) was entirely fictional, despite the perceived similarities to President Joe Biden announcing he would withdraw from the 2024 presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Let’s remember #Veep has already written a fictional version of this script. Kamala inherits the actual presidency. And runs for office. The Electoral College is tied. The House votes are tied. So the Senate has to choose a tiebreaker candidate. And in the end…JD Vance becomes president (warning, this is a soap opera…),” one fan wrote.
Citing the post, Iannucci added: “But let’s not forget that we made all this up.”
Since Biden endorsed Harris, many fans have posted memes on social media pointing out the resemblance between the character and Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the hit political comedy.
After several fans shared a scene from the show in which Selina announces to staff that the president has decided not to run for a second term and that she will run instead, one fan praised Iannucci in a post for “continuing to anticipate the realities of our politics.”
“I’m still figuring out the ending,” Iannucci joked, referencing the post.
Iannucci shared a throwback image of Dreyfus and Biden walking around the White House in slow motion in footage from the 2014 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, offering one last laugh.
With Biden’s endorsement, Harris secured enough pledged delegates in record time to win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot.
