Despite having no prior experience in wrestling or martial arts training, the Northern Virginia mom transformed her training with an unconventional approach.
In 2005, Carolyn Wester was a venture capitalist in California.
While observing her son’s wrestling practice, she noticed what seemed to be serious flaws in the fundamental techniques of wrestling, and she decided to speak out, which would eventually revolutionize the wrestling industry.
“I didn’t know anything about wrestling,” Wester said, “so I asked, ‘Are you aware that the structure you’re creating with your body doesn’t match up with the correct trajectory to capture your opponent’s structure and flip them over?'”
Wester’s intervention marked the beginning of her coaching career.
Her innovative techniques began with young people on the West Coast and quickly gained popularity, spreading across the country.
Over the years, Wester has earned the respect and friendship of top mixed martial artists such as Daniel Cormier and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Her science-based methods have revolutionized training for athletes both nationally and internationally.
Andrew Morgan, an Olympic Regional Training Center athlete with the Navy Wrestling Club, has been training with Wester since 2013.
He praised her methods, saying, “She’s able to mathematically analyze the sport and the body positions, specifically the body shapes that suit her. Her technique-based training is very well suited to high-level athletes.”
In addition to his coaching work, Wester and WrestlingPrep.com run a nonprofit called Friends of Wrestling Prep.
It was established to continue the support Wrestling Prep has provided to the wrestling and combat sports community since 2005.
