Will Ferrell has spoken out about why he feels transphobia persists around the world, admitting that there is “a lot of hate out there” towards transgender people.
“This is very real and very dangerous for transgender people in certain situations,” the actor said in an interview with The Independent published on Wednesday. Ferrell’s comments come as Will & Harper, a documentary that follows Ferrell and his close friend Harper Steele, a former Saturday Night Live head writer who came out as transgender, will be released on Netflix. It was announced a few days ago.
“But I don’t understand why trans people would threaten me, a cis man. I don’t understand why Harper would threaten me,” Ferrell said. “That’s so weird to me, because Harper is finally…her. She’s finally who she’s supposed to be. Whether or not she can finally wrap her head around it, why not?” Why should you care if someone is happy? If the trans community is a threat to you, it’s not about your self-confidence or self-confidence. I think it’s because of the lack of safety.”
As for why he believes transphobia exists in the first place, Ferrell told the outlet, “I think we’re afraid of what we don’t know.”
“What if we could go on a road trip together and give her a chance to go to cowboy bars and places she misses so I could be there for her and support her as a friend?” Ferrell told Netflix about the concept of a new documentary. said. “At the same time, it will give us a chance to reconnect and understand what this change means for our relationships.”
Steele said the documentary was an opportunity to experience life as a transgender person outside of the liberal bubble in which transgender people are more accepted. “I love the whole country. This is my country and I wanted to feel a little bit safer being there,” she said. “And I thought traveling around the country with Will Ferrell would help me.”
