Flagbearer of the All Peoples Congress (APC), Dr. Hassan Ayariga, has called on Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to use his influence to end illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the Ashanti region. .
Ayariga said Otumfuo’s authority exceeds that of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in terms of commanding respect in the Ashanti region, and believes the Asantehene is in a unique position to stop galamsey from destroying the environment. It is said that there is.
Ayariga’s appeal comes amid growing concerns about damage to water bodies, agricultural land and cocoa plantations as a result of illegal mining.
In an interview with Oyerepa TV on October 9, 2024, Ayariga stressed that no mining company can operate in the Ashanti region without Asantehene approval.
He suggested that a simple directive from Mr. Otumfuo could quickly halt illegal mining activities.
“There is only one person in Ghana who can stop illegal mining, and that person is the Asantehene. The Ashanti people respect the king more than the president because their king is for life. The Asantehene says, ‘Stop galamsey.’ If I say that, everything will stop,” he was quoted as saying by oyerepaonline.com.
He continued, “…no one, no mining company, can mine in the Ashanti region without the authority of the Asantehene, which the company would not dare to do.
“So if the Asantehene wants to stop people mining in the Ashanti because they are destroying Ashanti waters, they can just make one phone call and tell their sons to stop. Because the Asantehene has more power to stop them than the president of Ghana.
“The king and his people must protect the country because their children and grandchildren will suffer the consequences of this threat. should intervene and call for a stop to galamsey.”
