CNN anchor Anderson Cooper on Wednesday laughed at CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings’ “empty” criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris, who argued that the vice president is running on the promise of “vote for me and find out what I’m up to.”
“Nobody said anything tonight. Nobody said anything tonight. They want you to vote for a candidate without any concrete idea of what they’re going to do once they get into office,” Jennings protested on CNN, responding to Wednesday’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“I heard people tonight saying, ‘Well, I don’t agree with him on everything, but at least I’m happy they’re going to tax us to the point of ruining us,'” said Jennings, a former aide to former President George W. Bush. “The idea that an entire presidential campaign could be based on the idea of ’Vote for me and find out what’s inside’ should terrify every American.”
Cooper began laughing, then interjected, “Hold on a second. Scott, Scott, Scott, your candidate has been doing this his entire political career. Donald Trump never talks about policy issues.”
“Of course he would,” Jennings argued, to which Cooper responded, “Oh, he’ll kill inflation. No, he’ll eliminate inflation on day one. He’ll repeal Obamacare on day one. I mean, I get your point, but when I think about the candidate that you’re supporting, there’s no substance to what he’s saying, so it sounds a little hollow.”
Jennings fired back: “First of all, I’m the only one who’s not here to work for a candidate. OK? I work for CNN. I’m here to analyze the news. That’s number one. And number two, I think what they’re trying to say to the American people is, ‘We know that if we tell you what we’re going to do, it’s going to be incredibly unpopular.'”
