The Continental Leader of Asuom, Nana Boadi Ampomenim Abodade III, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and reform the mining sector before the end of his presidential term.
“Those who have prospecting licenses use them, but those who don’t have mining concession contracts only use paper and carefully destroy it wherever they go.”
“This is a big fight for the country because AC Zenon is Amina Tahir’s company and they say she is Abu Jinapoor’s brother and I am not afraid to say that, so she will just go and sign the compromise agreement.”
“Today the Asoum youths asked everyone to stop working, go back and take back all the destruction you have caused and most of them complied. Mrs. Amina Tahir says she will not comply. In fact, she is now sending soldiers to the site to guard it during the mining,” ctinewsroom.com quoted him as saying.
In an interview with Channel One News, the traditional leaders expressed concern over the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities especially in Asuom area.
He stressed that the situation has reached a crisis point, with illegal miners blatantly ignoring regulations and mining permits being misused.
“Mr. President, you are our uncle and brother. We have only a few months left, but we believe you can make a difference. You can do it. You have pledged to put the presidency on the line for galamsey. Your legacy will be measured by that pledge. If you do not do something now, posterity will not forgive you. We plead with you.”
“We can make a change within two months because we have seen good results within weeks of the ban. Let’s ban it. Let’s all work together. Let’s review the plan and do the right thing,” he added.
